T.D. Smith moved to Telluride immediately following his graduation from Purdue University in 1971. Nearly all dilapidated storefronts and historic houses were boarded up and in a state of disrepair in this "busted" gold mining town. However, there was talk of a ski area that opened the following year. T.D. embarked upon a career in real estate with his initial real estate sales consisting of old mine shacks and vacant lots. For three decades he has participated in the re-birth of this precious, historic mountain town helping to ensure quality, controlled growth and a sense of community.

The progression he has seen from ghost town to resort town has been remarkable. "The best thing about Telluride is that we are still a town first and a resort second. We have managed to maintain a sense of community where waiters and ski instructors are your neighbors. We've done the best job of any resort in the state of keeping our work force as a viable part of the community."

T.D. and Page, his wife, live in the historic Town of Telluride with their son, Alex, who is twenty one and attends Pitzer College outside of LA. Page is an extraordinary interior designer, and Alex is an avid skier, soccer and hockey player. T.D. has served many years as a director on the board of the Telluride Alpine Race Team. His involvement in youth programs attests to his belief that children are the heart and soul of any community. Directorships on Mountain Village Metro District, Affordable Housing Task Force, Board of Realtors (Past President), Sheridan Arts Foundation and Fair Housing Committee round out his active involvement in Telluride community affairs.
